I've been offered 58 per mile for a Transit SWB.

I know drivers with small vans that get paid more than that per mile.

I started up 8 years, getting paid 60 pence a mile for a small van, fuel was £0.87 a litre, make your own mind up!!

City Sprint.

They say they pay 6 quid for the first mile and then its 58p after that doesn't seem a lot.

If people stopped working for such low prices, then they would have no alternative but to put there prices up, while people work for them for poor money, then they will carry on paying poor money.

I had a feeling it might be them you were talking about. I get the impression that there's two sorts of people work for City Sprint ...

a).  Those that can afford to work for low mileage rates because they've got income coming in             from another source such as a pension and they just want some top up money.

b).  stupid people

Oh i dunno...I think customers that use CitySprint want a sameday courier....just don't wanna pay for one...and kind of get off on the will it or won't it get delivered by the close of play buzz....and drivers that work for them, work on the same principle...they think they've got enough fuel....but aren't entirely sure...

I am not going to work for them, not at that rate!

By the way,I didn't work for them I simply laughed and hung up.

AJM sameday Couriers

While people get out of bed and go and work for them at such low rates then why do they need to pay more, its not there fault, if people refused to work at that price they would have to increase prices.

JSD Couriers

Exactly AJM. Hence why I just hung up. Everyone needs to do that.

Speed Couriers Nationwide Ltd

Makes no sense wotsoever to me....at 70p per mile 40% goes on fuel...and when i started fuel accounted for around 20% of driverpay

exforcesecure

58p per mile does not pay the overheads or the bills.

unless the state are already paying them for you. then 58p is just beer money.

this is not a dig at you lot, but at them' if the cap fits.

anyvan is full of them. bidding so low it wont pay for a cup of tea at breake time.

these idiots are killing the courier business.

Anyvan and Shiply can be good, but at the right price,I've seen people bidding £14 for jobs, these sites take £7-8 in commission. Something's a miss there. Probably not insured. I use the two websites but only at prices I think are fair to top up work.

These "idiots" are not killing the Courier Industry..these jobs are not Courier jobs...courier work is not comprised of shit like whatsy ou see availble on those auction sites you mention

I always laugh at the people that say stick together . !!!

This is a business so all 6 of you can sit in the cafe moaning and saying Im not doing this and that but do you really understand and comprehend the size and distribution of this industry !!! ????

The ones paying low rates will always find somebody because the foolish fantasy of traveling the country always out weighs the risk and clouds the the true figures. They start up and get a van and the promise of lots of work gives them the feeling they have made it .There will always be mugs quing up lambs to the slaughter or however you would like to tell it

It will always be this way and in the old days there were always people running cheap this is nothing new Its just easier to find these people with the internet .

In the ninties I had an old curtain sider a company in Wakefield used to give me work but only on a Friday and weekends because he could get it done cheaper in the week by ex coal miners .Non of this stuff is new !!!!

I remember doing bank runs for TNT back in 2000.
There was one driver who would always try and get people to join together to instigate some kind of strike to force a rate increase, I always pointed out that everyone was self employed and in simple terms TNT would just give the run to someone else........And they did.

Speed Couriers Nationwide Ltd

10314

lol...i had one of them.....back in 2000 as well....he called a meet for a sat morning and out of 37 drivers 3 showed up....his biggest gripe was one of the drivers was moanin he was always being given London....this suprised me so I asked if he'd come to them and moaned or whether they had confronted him about it and his defence had been that I kept sending him in...they admitted that they'd asked him and he'd blamed me...once i explained that the reason he keeps getting London is cos he's screwin a nurse down there so wants the Londons they kinda shut up.

In their own little world of the TNT bank runners they all moan and do nowt about it, I was never a regular bank runner, but TNT MK used to have 3 bikers including me,all three of use stick together and had a daily price none of us would do a run for less than that, the out of London runs they only asked us if they were desperate or the van had broken down en route, however they had no option for the London runs, all it takes its to stick together.

Nottingham & Derby Couriers

3179

We had 8 small vans on these runs all on daily rates between £90 - £120 per day.
Bearing in mind the fuel prices then and now, Then TNT started to reduce the daily rate and said that Nat West were squeezing them and they had no option. Eventually we removed all of the vans as it was no longer viable.

Was it a male nurse?...strange question.....i think you're missin the point...i assume it was a female...i think most would.....you're a strange one...lol

Hello Mr MK bikes

Yes if you can only get 3 bikes in MK then you have a point and Im guessing its the case

The reality is that the van drivers are two a penny a high precentage very very desprate . They basicly own a van or foolishly leased or finaced one and have no marketing skills ,customer skill and dont even know how to gain business They basicly followed this reckless trail with no business plan . The ones that are managed to gain good business and make a living but its this large pool of desperados that mean nothing will ever change to the point that it is not even worth talking about !!!

Speed Couriers Nationwide Ltd

10314

Sadly all too true...it won't change....we don't undercut, we stick to our guns as we believe we offer a 1st class service...we will lose some work to cowboys and/or the big boys, but those that go are welcome to do so if its all about price...we offer so much more than that, and most of our customers know this.

Too many want a 1st class service at a 2nd class price....for me its all about what it is you expect from a Courier, what I expect is Professionalism and honesty, and I charge accordingly.

The last I knew the rate at which TNT wanted you to work a bank run for was £80 they were constantly mucking about with runs to try and equal mileage times to make it fair, pay everyone 80 quid LOL.

We wouldn't budge on £135 a day (10 years ago) and we often did the runs as a van would break down before or during the run, and the only way to make up time during the rush hour or in London was on a bike.
Around 2000 there was 3 bike couriers at TNT and only 4 total that I knew of in MK, theres still 4 in MK and I have 3.
Bank runners are a strange lot, I offered one a weekly collection which he went past at the right time on his way back to MK, he turned it down just in case "they" found out??

I did the TNT bank thing from Brizil TNT31
when the company I was subbing for went belly up,
4 figures a week with £250 over heads!!
trouble is this was a few weeks before the wankers Sorry bankers got their fingers burnt and they wanted it done cheaper with 16 extra drops and collections in the same time scale,
tried it for a bit didn't work!
as for the other company paying peanuts, you have to keep an eye on the self generated invoices as the agreed rate for your depot may not be the rate you are paid by another,
we noticed it and went through all of them again and found £400 of 'mistakes'

they are good for when you start up as they paid weekly so helps fuel etc

We also used to be the contingency backup.
We would send a van to Leicester every weekday just in case another driver didn't turn up. This alone was £40 for callout but was incorporated into any run covered.
The hours were long on the higher rated runs, One run started in Leicester at the AMC at 07:30 and went around mansfiels & Kirkby etc and all swaps had to go back to TNT Nottingham, The afternoon collections then started at 17:00 in Skegness , Ingoldmills and Market Raesen ETC.
All the bags had to then go to Shepshed VPC and then on to Leicester AMC fo about 20:30.
Then home to Nottingham.

I think your first post on this thread is right Tony!

What I can't fathom is why people moan about the amount they get paid!  No one is holding a gun to their heads.  If you aren't happy with what you will get DON'T DO IT!

This is not rocket science!
