Reverse parking sensors stopped working. Fitted when new (extra). They have been working fine then buzzer sounded fed up, now nothing. Car is a 2007 Civic, any ideas that leads to me fixing it gets a prize.

One of the front sensors on my car stopped working last month (although now has started working again by itself before I got round to fixing it).

On my car (BMW, but I'd imagine they're all the same) I could find the duff sensor by putting my ear very close to each one. Try the following:

  1. Try without the engine running (key turned half way) as the sound of the engine makes it more difficult.
  2. Turn on the parking sensors.
  3. Get out and go round each sensor putting your ear very close and you should be able to hear a faint clicking sound.
  4. The one that isn't clicking is the one that has either broken or has a dodgy connection.
  5. Look on eBay for a new sensor, I think I could get a genuine one for my car for about £30. I wouldn't bother with any cheap aftermarket parts.

I needed a new parking sensor for my BMW 5 series but it cost me £90 from the stealers. That wasn't even colour coded and about 4 years ago.

Yes they're still £90 from the stealers. Genuine ones on eBay for less though, I suspect the BMW price isn't the same everywhere and in the UK they try it on more than normal.

There's a few different variants, some primed and some in plastic. If you need painted ones then unfortunately you need the primed version and go to the body shop. Fortunately mine are the plain plastic ones!

Wouldn't be so bad if mine worked properly after fitting but did so only intermittently, so another waste of money as couldn't rely on them. All sensors are clicking now so might be a connection or a problem in the control box in the boot but although nice to have them they aren't really a necessity are they?

No they are not a necessity, they are a pain in the ass. Had a look this morning no clicking noise from any of them, so a bit stumped. It dosn't effect how it runs so will have a rethink. This vehicle might be going soon so I dont want to spend much money on it.

When mine work properly and the noise is continuous it means you are 20cm from the vehicle/obstruction in front or behind but that don't allow for the tow hitch... oops!

If they are original do they not just work when its in gear?

Mine are original and (should) only work when in the appropiate gear.

Tried what Admin said and nothing. Yes should only work when in gear.

I take it you've tested the fuse?

Yes, fuse was the first thing I checked.
