Any chance of a app or mtvan mobile for ease of use while out on the road.

This is something that is on the cards.

Please provide me with some info (and everyone else) and it'll help me come to a decision as to the best route to go down.

What platform do you use? iPhone, Andriod?

What do you want to do whilst on the road? I assume the big one is to quote on work and update your location?

It'd be useful if you let me know what you tend to find your coverage is like. Regularly out of signal? If so, an app would be a better bet than a mobile site IMO.

Good idea
I would like to see it for android and be able to update my location quickly and anything to make it quick to use and to quote fast.

I believe we would use the system a lot more if there was a mobile app, willing to pay a little extra for the service. At present I use a Blackberry but willing to change  if it’s worth it.

well I would think a site which is light for the mobile browser to load with a usefull map showing
where the work is rather than a postcode system which often does not always work properly!
I use the cx gtm map all the time and it is very usefull as it gives a very positive search,
I find CX too heavy to load even on a netbook on 3G which can cause a load of frustration when you want to book a courier on a sold GTM and you sitting in on the side of the road late for your own delivery,
Cx has the edge by far in that you can ring in and get GTM's and returns posted without the need to stop and boot up your own equipment,

I would think like most things in life if it is easy to use then it will get used if it is not then no one in the their right mind would out of their way to use it,
just my thoughts,
Dave

Like most owner drivers or small transport companies, probs like me on the road all the time its difficult to post jobs or show empty through your mobile on mtvan, last minute jobs need covering ASAP so a easy accessable mobile site would help a great deal, something really basic would do just include the relevent info and easy log in,This would give you a edge over other sites. Most people post jobs that need covering because there busy which means there on the road.

Android - the iPhone is a woman's phone!

Hi guys, just a quick update. This will be a tracking app initially, then we'll add more to it. Probably the ability to get job notifications and be able to bid whilst on the road.

Still got quite a bit to do, but I am making progress:

would be usefull if u could post empty vehicles in other areas where the drivers shall be empty & receive job alerts with in that area or with in a radius a bit like return journeys on the cx to bid on.

Website Admin

You can do that on the site (and be sent alerts from that area), but I agree it could be something for the app.

It's worth getting a tracking only version out first though rather than waiting 18 months for a gold plated version with every feature you could think of.

I think I know it, but what's the link to their app you've installed? I think I have it too although cannot login obviously!

We are currently working to get approval from Apple to get into the App Store. Can be a long process, we'll keep you updated.

This is what I downloaded.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.transportexchangegroup.cx4a&hl=en

It also places you on their 'Live Availability' map, and gives you notifications of available jobs close to you, wherever you are.

Thanks, that's their Android version but I think it's the same. I'll check it out.

P.S. There's a button on the forum editor for making links.

This is going to be iOS only initially.

I reckon most people are using Android.

I think you're right in that the market may be moving that way but our site stats said otherwise earlier this year. I'll just dig up some.

Website Admin

6679

Ok, here's some stats of our site visits by different mobile platform over a recent fixed time frame:

  1. Apple iPhone - 923
  2. Apple iPad - 677
  3. (not set) - 311
  4. Samsung GT-I9300 Galaxy SIII - 138
  5. HTC Mozart 7 Mozart - 99
  6. Samsung GT-I9100 Galaxy S II - 95
  7. Asus Eee Pad Transformer TF101 - 89
  8. Samsung GT-P1000 Galaxy Tab - 71
  9. HTC S510e Desire S - 50
  10. Samsung GT-N7000 Galaxy Note - 46

In addition to the above we thought it was worth testing the water with an iOS app first as the development experience is a little more pleasant, although still a lot of work.

(Edit: Stats from our Google Analytics)

Hi Admin. Do you have a statistic for members who did not answer the poll or is that the (Not set) statistic?

S Garner Courier

I was assuming the stats were gathered from recorded site visit data as opposed to a poll. If I'm right, would it not be worth having a poll to ask which of the site users would use an app and which platform would be preferred?

If the data above is purely from site visits, it may not give a representation of who would actually use/benefit from the app.

Website Admin

6679

Yes the stats are from site visits. I don't think polling members would give any more conclusive data, and in any case the iPhone app is as good as done right now.

I have just go to grips with the computerisazion of my large sky scraper (that would be the portacabin I paid £350 for. I don't have a sky scraper honest!)

I think moble apps are in my five year plan!

I don't think so. Our members do not use Android more than iPhone and the result is more likely to be better when building for iPhone/iOS.

I cant see my Nokia 6230i in your list of stats, do you think it might be time for me to upgrade ?

Website Admin

Nokia 6230i

Yes, perhaps it is.

I think it's more accurate to describe these new devices as small computers with phone functionality than smart phones or similar. An iPhone is a small Apple Mac. I think it's worth using one regularly for a while to see how you get on with it.

moray couriers

I did have an apple iPhone but my wife saw it and then I never did again !! but the real reason I use one like the above is because that one fits in my cars built in hands free kit but before I put my van on the road I intend to get an Iphone with a Parrot hands free thingy or run it thru' the TomTom as your new app sounds appealing. ps. my Nokia is a black one.

A quick heads up to let our members know that version 1.0 of the mtvan app is now in the App Store.

More details to come soon.
