Trevor Baldwin joins MTVan

Hello, may I take a moment to introduce myself. I am Trevor and have been operating as a freelance courier for several years now and have completed over 550 successful jobs throughout the UK from my home town of Lymington to as far away as Thurso.

I had been registered with the Courier Exchange platform until recently when I decided not to renew the subscription as it was not working out cost effective for me.

Though I am currently living in Lymington, Hampshire, my partner and I are moving to the Wigan district by January 2014. Locally I have established myself enough that I get supplied much work from local logistics companies such as Forest Logistics Ltd, Astral Couriers, and OTR Couriers to name a few.

When I move north I hope to develop good business relationships with the logistics companies in that area. I have joined mtvan this day because the pricing seems quite reasonable and their infrastructure seems similar to what I have been used to, without being over-complicated.

I own a Renault Kangoo TDI van (reg 58) which is serviced every 12,000 miles without fail and is in excellent condition throughout. I carry on board a tracker system (link always available to employer and customer), two phones, iPad and WiFi for complete communications.

If I'm hired for a dedicated delivery then that is what I do without fail. Customer satisfaction matters to me - it is my reputation as well.

Welcome to MTvan Trevor and welcome up t'north in January. You should find that there is more opportunity for work up here, being near to Manchester, Liverpool, Preston, etc.

Thank you RGM, good to hear from you. I look forward to working with you. Yes, I agree with you. The work potential should be better, with so many industrial centres around my new base. May I ask you a question regarding pricing up t'north? Currently I get average 78ppm here. Are the northern rates about the same?

Wigan area, you need you bumps felt, over congested, traffic jams and always raining, no i'm not been sarcastic just honest, I do a bit of work for a friend who lives near Wigan, he pays me 80 pence a mile, most folk up here are tight Northerners, you won't get anywhere near 78 pence a mile sorry to be the bearer of bad news I'm just telling the truth, stay down South better weather and a rate your happy with.

78pplm is reasonable. I'm running around the same - 70pplm.. Some customers pay more (up to 90pplm). I've got a couple of long term subbing customers who won't budge above 65pplm but I get a lot of work off them including double ups and returns which they pay full rate for. In short, there's no hard and fast rules for charging! Some have a fixed rate which they won't budge from and sit at home whingeing on these forums. My theory is it's better to be a busy fool than an idle fool who won't be flexible on their rates!
