It seems I have taken over the Forums this afternoon...this is for the following reason:-

It is quieter than quiet man McQuiet who lives in quiet house, quiet road, quietville in the county of quietshire.
IT IS RATHER QUIET...and as a result I have some spare time to observe and add my thoughts on several subjects on todays Forum....please accept them purely as my individual thoughts, that in no way are the thoughts of anyone else other than me.

What do you mean by the pretend Olympics?

AJM sameday Couriers

The people participating in the pretend Olympics have more guts than anybody on here, it takes somebody without guts to make such a stupid and pathetic comment.

I must be a pretend courier then?

i call it the pretend Olympics as most things in it are not Olympic sports anymore, i call all Olympics pretend Olympics, pro athletes taking part in whats meant to be amateur games.

the paralympics though has gone too far, events called murder ball, what the hell is that.
i saw a brit girl win gold in cycling and her disability was a missing hand, don't you cycle with your legs, and she only just missed out on the able bodied Olympics so entered the paralympics.

that cant be right.

your either in one or the other surely
dont get me wrong i think the paralympics are better than the normal ones as the athletes work harder to get there but come on if you watch it most athletes are not really disabled, one wheelchair basket ball team has 3 players that can walk they just play well in the chairs, yep its the british team

Missing hand? I call that pretty essential when you rely on your hands and arms to support your weight on a bike. They are in categories of impairment to try and even things out so in my book she did good.

As for the wheelchair basket ball don't they give each competitor so many points for the severity of their disability and the whole team cannot add up to more than so many points? Seems pretty fair to me.

Sorry not with you on this 3T.

Paralympics are nearer to what the original format was all about, it is a shame the corporate and marketing men have encroached, and pro's are allowed to participate in both Olympics and Paralympics. Sad to day tho but without money no one would be there.

What I think both have shown us this last month or so, is what can be acheived by anyone...whatever you colour, religion, background or disability.

What would be nice is if the media could keep bigging the UK up as they have during the Olympics instead of concentrating on doom doom and more doom. If everyone was just a little bit more positive I think we'd all benefit

My lad was watching one of the ladies sprint events on television this morning and he says to me ... "what's wrong with any of them then" ... referring to the fact that none of the competitors appeared to have any obvious disability. I must admit that I struggled to try and explain to him about 'hidden' disabilities in a sporting context.

Then there's Ellie Simmonds, Britain current 'golden girl'. One of my mates is a 'short person' and if you suggested to him that he was disabled he would be mightily offended and it would probably get you a punch in the goolies.

"but come on if you watch it most athletes are not really disabled, one wheelchair basket ball team has 3 players that can walk they just play well in the chairs, yep its the british team"

All Paralympians are disabled, within wheelchair basket ball the teams are "Graded" on their disability, some of the disabilities which qualifiy for wheelchair basketball are Cerebal Palsy, Spina Bifida & Brittle bones  yes they can probably walk but they are still disabled.

(The abled bodied are allowed to participate in Wheelchair basketball leagues but are not allowed to compete internationally)

"events called murder ball, what the hell is that"  Although that's the original name thats been seized on by the media but its Wheelchair rugby!

Paralympians although still disabled are very fortunate enough, that their fitness can shine above their disability, lets hope that everyones admiration & respect for the disabled converts into everyday life, although I very much doubt that when the biggest hypocrite Cameron is cheering them on.

If by being able to walk you think they're able bodied.....look again...i think you'll find they're wearing prosthetics when not in the chair!!!!...

sorry if i offended some of you but i stand by my comment that some of the athletes should not be there, did anyone else see the brit 16 year old girl swimmer from norwich, she won gold and she has learning difficulties, in her tv interview afterwards she was maybe a little slow maybe nervous but she was able bodied, in the same race as a girl with one hand missing, how is that fair.

ellie simmonds is a midget, nothing more but to compete in the paralympics is wrong, do we have tall people in the paralympics because they are tall?

the south african with no legs , he is a true paralympian, as are others with real dissablilities but if your there coz your small or because your not so smart, its just wrong.
one handed table tennis player who is in the top 50 in the world, anyone seen any deaf athletes? ( not sure how you would tell but are they really right to be in paralympics?)

anyone seen the film ringer, its what it reminds me of.

(These categories apply to both summer and winter Paralympics.)

Amputee: Athletes with a partial or total loss of at least one limb.

Cerebral Palsy: Athletes with non-progressive brain damage, for example cerebral palsy, traumatic brain injury, stroke or similar disabilities affecting muscle control, balance or coordination.

Intellectual Disability: Athletes with a significant impairment in intellectual functioning and associated limitations in adaptive behaviour (currently suspended.)

Wheelchair: Athletes with spinal cord injuries and other disabilities which require them to compete in a wheelchair.

Visually Impaired: Athletes with vision impairment ranging from partial vision, sufficient to be judged legally blind, to total blindness.

Athletes with a physical disability that does not fall strictly under one of the other five categories, such as dwarfism, multiple sclerosis or congenital deformities of the limbs such as that caused by thalidomide.

dont get me wrong my friends dad has had his legs amputated due to diabetes and watching it he claims too many athletes do not deserve to be there, i have been impressed with the cerabl palsey ones, must be hardest thing when you cant really control your muscles, and clearly the amputees are great but i stick by the fact a midget should not be there, it makes him mad when you bring her up, he goes right into one about how she has 2 arms, 2 legs, full use of all her body yet coz she is short she earns 25k per year funding and has an easy life, he on the other hand has no legs but lives on 200 pound a week which he needs to spend each week for a carer so he can bath himself.

i've seen true disability and lots of these athletes are not so.
