As winter approaches so does the fear of spending cold lonely nights in my Tin Tent.

With that in mind i wondered how much you would be willing to spend on a warm bed after being holed up in a location miles away from home for the night.

what's your maximum price room only without breakfast?

Personally its accross the seats for me though I do have curtains in the van and am waiting on a heater beg fitted

How can you sleep accross seats? Do you have a board & mattress?

Tried a few times in van and was so uncomfortable! Without a night heater in winter I imagine it could be lethal

Bench seat on the passenger side its fine as long as you've got a good sleeping Bag you should be warm enough and if you get cold you could always eu. The engine for 30 mins to warm the cab up

The gap between bench seat and driver seat I found the problem :)

I've slept across the seat in my van many time. It's not the most comfy sleep, but it somewhere to kip if you've been on the road for a while. I spend more time in my van than I do at home these days.

Some of us hardcore who dont use vans have to rely on tents and sleepbags, or even lay across the bike using the top box as a pillow ;), but as Rapids pointed out, pass the cost on and have a comfy night in some lodge usually works.

All depends on where I am & what time I need to be away in the morning. If I know in advance I'd be over nighting I'd budget for digs in that area & book ahead where possible. But I have no problem sleeping in van when necessary & always keep a 4 season sleeping bag & overnight night bag in van just in case.

I slept in an Escort van in a Belgium service station about 15 years ago coming back from Luxemburg & it was that cold, when I woke up my head/hair was frozen solid to the window. Sleeping in the van wasn't much fun that night.

As for how much I'd pay for a room that would depend on the price given for the job & what's available in that area etc. When I was in my 20's & 30's I'd happily sleep in a van but these days I don't mind paying for a bit of comfort.

Truckstops are good value. Stayed in one in Ashford, Kent not long ago. It was £33/night inc. Full breakfast. Just park away from the trucks and you'll be ok!

Youth Hostels are cheap and clean but some do close for the winter season, It's always a gamble on getting a B&B hoping to get a return load,

I'm with Alan on this one, its a sad state of affairs if you can't afford a hotel for the night. Sleep in the van? Get a grip lads!

Have had quite a few nights sleeping in my Connect, 'mummy' type sleeping bag from Tosco and I fitted an auxillary heater powered by a leisure battery, two pillows, one for my head and one over the handbrake which I leave off. The only problem I find is that if I move during the night I am liable to blow the horn with my knees which is live at all iimes (but it's a Ford !) Otherwise no problem, winter or summer. And I never over sleep as I'm sure I would if in a motel type place.
