Have you thought about going through Belglium and the south of Germany you will save a bit in tolls and Luxemburg has cheaper fuel just a thought.

Go through Switzerland unless you have freight on board. Beautiful country and quicker, but depends if you want to do it cheaper and more slowly by avoiding toll roads.

DON'T go via Switzerland with freight, you need correct forms and being prepared for possible long wait at customs.

Don't get snapped by a speed camera in Switzerland. IIRC it's a criminal offence there rather than a civil offence (like here and France etc). I hear that if you're any more than just a little over the limit they do chase you and/or keep a record to get you when you next return.

Read somewhere that they rob vehicles even when the driver is in it in Italy so beware, have a safe trip

About 15 years ago I got nabbed coming out of a 50mph tunnel at 56mph, instant on the spot fine of £780 or car impounded, hate to think how much it is now.

  1. For which vehicles is a vignette compulsory? Vignettes are compulsory for all motor vehicles with a maximum gross total weight up to and including 3.5t (cars, motor-homes, motorcycles).

The best and cheapest route to milan is as follows this route i take on a weekly basis :

take euro tunnel then lille to namur namur to luxembourg luxembourg to pirmasen germany pimasen to stutgart stutgart to fredrickshafen fredrickshafen to insbruck austria insbruck to fern pass fern pass to merano merano to bergamo bergamo to milan there are tolls on in austria (vignetes )purchased at the border this is cash only or the shell garage 15 km further on, (dont get caught without one )500 euro fine payable instantly , if paying by fuel card dklv or other .

the way and time from birmingham to milan is approx 18 hours driving .

with a stop at either luxembourg or pirmasen (beutiful steak )in the shell garage

parking over night is normaly free in the service areas or if you stop at an autohof there is a charge of around 10 euros but this is given back in the way of shop/ resturaunt vouchers to spend to the same value as parking fee

in the winter 15th october till the 15 april it is law in all countrys outside the u.k to have winter tyres on the vehicle or snow chains if over 3.5 tonne hope this is helpful regards Terry
