Hi, A quick question re quoting for jobs on CX. what does everyone think should be a reasonable rate ie Price Per Loaded Mile for a Hotshot on CX. Price is for LWB Trannie. Cheers

As always ... it depends on your circumstances. Work out your own price based on your overheard + a reasonable profit and try it out on a few people. You'll soon find out whether it's any good or not.

Bugger! that should have read 'overheads'. I wish I could remember to put my glasses on when I'm writing.

Thanks, I was trying to get an idea of other peeps average price.....ie i charge a plm rate and then add on extra if its
a long way to collection or c/charge or whatever...i have my own rates which i think are reasonable but im just curious what others charge....

No offence mate, but if I had the same vehicle as you I wouldn't tell you what I charged as I'd be as good as telling how much to undercut me by.

£1 a mile seems to be what people want and I have no problem with that, although as with all rates it does fluctuate, Some charge 80p, some £1.20. I think the difference between this and small vans is it depends on the load as well as where its going.

when i bid £1 a loaded mile on cx people laugh down the phone, there are so many people running at cost and killing the industry thats my opinion any way whats every one elses view, and the same goes for europe prices aswell

Very true comment Metson, I got offered unlimited amounts of work for a small van at an amazing price of 58 pence per mile, I declined, in 2004 I could get 60-63 pence per mile when fuel was about 87 pence a litre.

Couriers come and go, some good and some bad. Nothing stays the same and we all have to adapt and move on. We all have choices and we all have a right to moan.

The current mileage rates are not the fault of "normal" Courier Companies, they are the fault of the few "big boys" AND what people are prepared to pay. Sadly people expect a 1st class service for a 2nd class price. Yes rates should be higher, but they're not

My rates are my rates, my margin is my margin. I choose what I think is a fair rate to my customer, I have a margin i'd like to make, and as soon as it becomes obvious neither can be achieved is the time I look to increase my rates.

I could reduce my rates, double my turnover, and make absolutely no more profit whatsoever. We can all be busy making no money, and there are undoubtedly contracts out there I could get, but not at a price that would make it worthwhile for me. That's not to say they're not worthwhile for someone else though.

The Bigboys can get away with a silly margin cos they are big enough....making 10% on a turnover of 10million is worth doing, making 10% for me isn't.

So if someone out there wants to put in a quote on an exchange site for one of my jobs at 70p per mile am i going to say "nooooo...have £1"...of course I'm not.

I don't take the piss out of my customers, I don't take the piss out of drivers, and hopefully you don't take the piss out of me.

It's you guys that dictate my rates to my customers, as well as what my customers are willing to pay.

I personally dont expect anybody to charge me less than £1 plm in a lwb when I sub work out, but if they did that would be great but they are never going to make a decent profit on anything less than that.

nd whenToo many people depend on exchange site and if you are doing this I dont think you deserve to survive as a business . As Rob say things change and you need to adapt as time goes by

Try to focus on the new year by finding work without using exchange sites make this next years goal. !!

Dont rule out talking to Business link or whatever they call ir now . Too many courier people rubbish this before they visit but if you knew more than they do why the hell are you struggling !!!!!!!

Consider going a different route find other work and maybe take on a specialist vehicles such as luton tail lift flat bed fride van or even flat bed hi hab !!!!!!

Rob and Nottingham boy constantly mention waiting the phone to ring and thats the problem ! You have to go out and get it Boy !! and if you cant do that you maybe the wrong sort of person to be doing this .You should leave !!!! I dont advertise join exchange sites (well this one !) because I have a lifetime of contacts and people always come to us and when they dont I get on the phone and ring around .Your not a courier your a sales person its always been that way .If in doubt you might be best leaving now before you become bunkerrupt !!!!!

VERY WELL SAID

As for european rates, yes there are people running around out there for next to nothing, but then there is always decent companies who pay decent prices

Very true Mr HSP but I think the internet exchange site courier is so blinded by what goes on in his world he is conpletely deluded about what goes on in the rest of the world he neither has the skills, experience and the presentation . The cheap couriers that are talked about on these sites are only a small precentage of the entire trade the rates are there The European jobs are not there like they used to be but they are paying the rates but nobody would know as people dont talk about it and why should they, they only talk about whats wrong . Npbody getting the goods rates are going to tell everybody .Nobody is go to tell anybody what they are charging a customer let alone who that customer is !!! I have a customer and everybody tells me not to work with him as he is a crock . Yes I know he has done a few people but he has paid me a god rate on the same day of the job for 20 years !!! but Im not going to tell you lot that !!.

So I would like to say to those that think that running cheap is the only way this job works to remind yourself you are a fraction of the industry and you do not have the rates you should because you are buying work. You again do not have the skills or expertise to gain this work and again if this is you ,you should ask yourself "should I really be doing this ?! THINK CAREFULLY ABOUT THAT ONE !

There are chauffeurs, Hackney Carriage Taxis and Minicabs......you decide which is for you, and what you can afford. Some Minicabs think they are chauffeurs, and some chauffeurs act like minicabs

It's not for me to tell you who is who but some make it easier than others
