I got tugged today (again) by the vosa 3300kg! I didnt have the front to tell them i had just delivered one pallet which i reckon went 550kg, print always seems heavy. Im thinking about getting a 4.5 ton Transit because sooner or later my lucks going to run out! When i lived in Canada the Sprinter i drove was 4 ton (twin wheel) & i dont think you had to have any 'special licence' My question is could i run a 4.5 tonner & use someone elses operaters licence or is this a no no or 'cowboy' way of operating? its just the other firm that works out of the inlaws printers with trucks said for a nominal fee they could add a motor (mine) to there licence!

Close call!

Problem is, it goes from practically no restrictions on a 3.5t van to having to abide by every rule under the sun to run an O licence. Tacho hours are a grind and regular vehicle checks (every 6 to 10 weeks I think) are a pain in backside. They're like stringent MOTs and the person/company doing the checks will often flag up every little thing to cover their own backs, and you have to make sure you get each thing fixed. It's a costly old business.

If this other company has a full O Licence (not restricted, meaning they can only transport their own goods) that they're happy to let you use then that's a very kind offer. If anything happened to your vehicle and it was found to be unsafe or had missed a regular check, there could be big problems for the O Licence holder.

Running on someone else's licence is not exactly legitimate but rules do get bent...
