Yes it is. Anyvan and Courier Expert do live in a dream. (prices pplm).

THERE IS A JOB ON THERE FROM CM8 TO AB11 FOR A SWB VAN WE QUOTED (£454) ON IT AND THE REPLY WAS ALONG THE LINES OF YOU ARE TAKING THE PISS SO I WOULD HAZARD A GUESS THAT THEY ARE LOOKING AT GETTING THE JOB DONE FOR ABOUT £55.00 AND THIS FOLKS IS WHAT WE HAVE TO LOOK FORWARD TO ALL BECAUSE WE HAVE ALOWED THE ANY TWAT WILL DO'S OF THIS WORLD TO START UP, BUT WORST PART IS THEY ARE STARTING TO GET ON HERE NOW BOTH LISTING JOBS AND TAKING THEM.

Dennis

You were indeed taking the piss for a SWB - I'd have been quoting close to that for a small van excluding overnight accommodation charge - no way you can do that round trip in one day.

Speed Couriers Nationwide Ltd

A site for sameday urgent is what we want, there are dozens of other sites for all the other types of deliveries. Let us not confuse what we do with all the other stuff. It all has its merits, and it's place, but that place is not here

SLH Boston Ltd

5670

Well dennis that was not the point was it? The point was that they would not pay a going rate for the job in the first place, they wanted the job done for pin money.

Dennis

676

I'm sure they did. BUT if you underquote you still contribute to the "Any twat will do" syndrome.

Dennis

676

I mean, what if they had accepted that quote? Would it have been profitable as a standalone urgent job?

SLH Boston Ltd

5670

That is true but when there is no fixed rates out there it is nigh on impossible to quote the correct rate, and as for your next question the answer is yes it would even after fuel and drivers wages and a night in Travelodge.

Thanks boy, as the dragons say " I'm out" Also I understand we don't want dead miles but do you think if they having super backload prices they will reduce their insurance claim?

That what about 1100 mile round trip? Not extracting urine with that price given it will also see you £200 in fuel and £50 for B+B , therefore £200 for 2 days work

It's not just fuel, for god's sake! It's 1100 miles off his tyres, 1100 miles closer to the next service and 1100 miles off his timing belt/chain.

My combo would cost approx £275 to do that run. £454 is 80pplm + £30 for overnight. If I had quoted on a same day urgent I would have asked £475+vat £150 profit for 16 hrs driving So it seems a tad cheap to me? For anything less than £100 miles I'm looking for 85pplm

A combo is not SWB, which is what he was quoting for.

In my LIMITED experience, Aberdeen is not one of those places where you can get a cheap Travelodge - busy town, more like £60 a night. (Just looked em up, four Travelodges at Aberdeen, £129, £139, £149 and £149 for Monday night.)

And what wage is he paying his driver for two days?

He said that £454 would pay a profit "QUOTE - as for your next question the answer is yes it would even after fuel and drivers wages and a night in Travelodge. - UNQUOTE"

SLH Boston Ltd

5670

Well that has put the cat amongst the pigeons. You all forgot to ask do I own or lease the vans. Plus none of you would just run up there and stop the night and run back the next day empty, or would you?

SLH Boston Ltd

5670

The prices you have listed for Travelodge dennis are for a private booking, but we have a business account and only pay £30.00 per night and all our quotes are ex vat. And our rate for swb is £0.85 plm, and as for wages dennis all my drivers get 50% after fuel we cover the rest.

Does it cost more or less to lease or own?

I price for empty returns. What if your driver was forced to come home empty? Or do you make him stay there until you can find a return load? How long does he stay there waiting? With at least 10 or 11 hours drive ahead of him (not counting pickup time delay/mileage)? One point I was making was that to price in the expectation of (or indeed depending on) a return load is not a great idea.

SLH Boston Ltd

5670

DENNIS, YOU CAN BUDGET FOR DEAD MILES ( RUNNING EMPTY) BUT YOU CAN NOT CHARGE £0.85 THERE AND BACK, AND AS FOR LEASING IT CAN MAKE A BIG DIFFERANCE WHEN WORKING OUT YOU COSTS, WHEN YOU OWN YOUR VAN YOU HAVE TO BUGET FOR ALL THE COSTS OF RUNNING IT BUT WHEN LIKE US YOU LEASE IT WITH FULL MATANACE INCLUDED THEN THE RUNNING COSTS ARE FIXED THERE FOR YOUR COSTS PER LOADED MILE ARE EASY TO WORK OUT AND NOT A GUESTIMATE.

SLH Boston Ltd

5670

Sorry dennis, the cap lock was on again we use another program nat will only work with it on sorry mate.

My price for a small van subbie rate, not end customer rate, is 80pplm ex vat. It's one way mileage and I come back empty. I don't co-load, simply because it never works out. If I wake up in Aberdeen, 10-11 hours away from home, I confess I shall not be looking to extend that time by driving off route to get a return load, even if I carried a computer/tablet with internet connection.

However, £454 less £30 for the Travelodge, less (at least) £200 for fuel, leaves £225. The 50% for your driver pays him £112 for two days driving, £5 an hour.

Look, I'm not trying to put you down, but you posted that your quote of £454 was rejected, when you thought that was a suitable price. I simply don't agree.

Andy McTighe

£200 fuel for 1100 miles = 26 mpg at £1.05 plus vat per litre. My LWB Boxer does 31mpg on a Scotland run and 33mpg away from the hills so I reckon your fuel cost calculation is way out.

Andy McTighe

As an owner driver I'd most likely sleep in the van as well, unless the wife had come on a sight seeing mission.

SLH Boston Ltd

ANDY, OUR SPRINTER 4.2m DOES 36 MPG LOAD OR NOT AND JUST UNDER 650MILES TO A TANK BUT IF YOU LOOK AT THE VW CADDY MAXI 2.2M LOAD SHE DOES JUST UNDER 800 MILES TO A TANK AND OUR FUEL COSTS ARE 1.09 PER LITRE INCL VAT SO OUR FUEL COSTS ARE LOW AND AS WE HAVE ACCOUNTS WITH TRAVELODGE/PREMIER INN AND IBIS HOTELS WE WILL NOT HAVE ARE DRIVERS SLEEP IN THE VANS AND THE RATES WE PAY FOR THE NIGHTS OUT WILL COVER A SECOND DRIVER ( WIFE GOING ALONG FOR THE RIDE)

Andy McTighe

I have done virtually the same route for £500 and would be happy to do it again. Can I buy some diesel off you? :-)

SLH Boston Ltd

5670

ANDY, IF YOU LOOK HARD YOU CAN GET A GREAT PRICE FOR FUEL ON FUEL CARDS PLUS WHEN YOU HAVE BEEN USING A CARD AS LONG AS WE HAVE YOU ARE BETTER PLACED TO GET A GOOD PRICE PER LITRE THE SAME GOES WITH HOTEL AND FERRY PRICES AND INSURANCE MOST CAN NOT GIVE IT THE TIME TO HAGGLE. WE HAVE DONE THE SAME IN OUR SPRINTER AND THAT COST THE CUSTOMER £668 PLUS VAT

Sounds good, but as you know it will be flooded with low paid rubbish classing itself as sameday urgent, and there my friend will be another recipe for more moaning and whinging...

£1.09 including vat is 91p net which is quite a bit less than the garages pay for it round here. I pay £1.04 plus vat on my fuelcard.

He explained higher up, that he uses a computer program that only works with it on and forgot to switch it off. I think he must be a fantastic touch-typist as he can type without looking at what he's writing.

Careful when signing up for a fuel card they normally charge an upfront fee - always double check
