Hi Guys, I'm looking to become a courier I have a van and have been doing deliveries, removals etc. For a friend for a while and I'm looking to go self employed with ukMail around October as I'll be 21 then. Can anyone advise the best place to get insurance and any other tips or advice (apart from don't do it, its a waste of time. Theres no money in it so on.)

Any help appreciated.

Thanks,

Vanessa

Being under 25 as you know is an excuse for insurance companies to take the p*** and this industry is no exception

Regretably I would say it'll make it uneconomic for you

I've found quotes of £2,300 for myself on a lwb transit. I'm not sure if it can get any better than that. I currently pay £1,600 on my SWB Vivaro which I use for personal use.

Under 25...

Dont do it, Its a waste of time. Theres no money in it.

Unless your dads rich and he's going to buy you a van, Insure it for Hire or reward GIT and Public Liability and help cover the cost of servicing, repairs and daily running expenses.

I think I will take it in October when I get the van. I'll shop around a lot until then and see what I can do.

Why is courier insurance so high? Is it due to amount of accidents, amount of miles or is it something else?

Cos we do 50,000+miles a year some bright spark assumes we have more accidents cos we're on the road more

And white van man hasn't helped either

And cos they can

Dont be supprised if the price is not the same in October. It usually goes up not down

Hey Speedy... You must spend a lot of time in McDougals drinking tea ...50,000 miles I bought my van in October 2012 and all ready clocked up 25,000 miles and I had christmas off... And I waswas having my good lucks made even more SEXI looking in the new year...

£2,300?! I'm 24 and pay £3k for a swb Transit, and that took some finding.

I could really do with an extra £700 right now!

Thes companies have to cover themselves I wouldn't fancy insuring any white van man the majority are barmy.

I'm sure they make a pretty penny though.

It also doesn't seem fair that a no claims bonus on a car counts for nothing on a H&R policy. When I started my H&R, they didn't seem to care that I'd been driving for 6 years without incident

Question is how much profit did you make once you have took out your costs?

Yeh I made a lot of money, it's not the amount that gets me, it's other drivers I know who pay £1200, £1600 etc and I'm paying out £3600+ and do the exact same thing as them.

When your alot older, you will be paying less, just like the rest of us now.. The joys of being young, anyway if youve made alot of money then youve nowt to complain as it will pay for your next yrs..
