Address Confirmation

Hi everyone.

We've just added address confirmation to mtvan. This is free for all members and means that we can verify that addresses are not false and provide more evidence to our members when they're thinking of working with another.

What happens?

After you've double checked your address for correctness and formatting, just press the button to confirm your address. We will send you a card in the post with a unique code on it that you must then enter on the site to confirm.

You should get your postcard within 2 or 3 days.

What to do?

Head over to the general details page where you can update all sorts of things about your profile. Go to the 'Company Address' section and check your address. Follow the red 'Address Not Confirmed' link to start the process.

Why is it necessary to publicise our addresses? I personally don't for security reasons. ie. I don't want my house to be robbed while I'm away on a job. If anyone needs it for work/invoicing reasons then I'll provide it to them.

Just to be clear, your address is visible only once logged in. And only to those with more than 200 rep.

It's likely that you may soon be given a choice partially to hide it, but only if your address is confirmed.

To answer the question, so people know who they are trading with, and that they can come after you if there's a problem.

Sounds a bit intimidating.

Yes, that's a better way of putting it.

There has been a couple of instances where there has been confusion due to it not being clear enough that you had to follow the red 'Address Not Confirmed' link to go through to the confirmation process.

We have now updated the details page once more in an attempt to make this clearer. There's now a button that says 'Address Not Confirmed' on it, click this to confirm it. Alongside it is 'Edit Address' rather than just 'Edit'.

I've done it and now eagerly awaiting my letter ;-)

Maybe they need a Courier to deliver the letters!?

Won't stop people from using virtual offices or hidden PO boxes like our mate in Devon! But better than nothing.

You shouldn't be allowed to register a po box number unless you have a very good reason ie living in a box (on the river or wheels that is)

I would be a bit suspicious of this on a trade forum, I mean you wouldn't rack up a bit for a customer who wanted to meet you round the corner with the job from where they actually work from would you

I think they should receive a postcard in the normal way. But addresses are displayed on profiles if you have over 200 rep, so you can chose to avoid them. Do you know of anyone with a PO Box number on here? To be honest if we see any we'd probably question them directly.

After updating my address details does that now mean my phone will not stop ringing with job offers?

This should be mandatory for all on this site.

I applaud anyone that tries to stop fraudsters, conmen and the like from joining up but i fail to see how this address confirmation does anything to resolve it.

It's not 100% absolutely foolproof, of course, but for that postcard to have found its way to the one person out of 1097 companies, it's going to have to have enough detail on it to get it to him/her.

When you arrive in search of either payment, or of your customer's goods, that same detail will help you to find them too, and at the very least you'll know that there is some kind of real connection between that address and the person you are looking for.

Hi Admin. I have received my Address confirmation, and tried entering it half a dozen times. System refuses to accept the code. Over to you.

Hello [name],

You have edited your address quite a few times and requested more than one confirmation code. Each of the codes is unique and only the latest one will be valid. Please wait for the next postcard to come (you've requested 3, the one sent today is the one you want) and enter it without changing/re-saving your address and it will work.

If you edit your address you will have to get a new confirmation code.
