I done a job for someone on Courier Exchange the other day and gave them my price. I completed the job for them and They then emailed me and asked what my mileage rate was. I replied to the email only to be told that it was too expensive, yet they have been ringing me asking to cover more work for them, yet i'm too expensive.

What mileage rate do they expect these days. I have been covering work for alot members since i started working for myself back in april this year. They all know my rate and do call me regular, but these that want low rates and 1st class service struggle to get work covered. Maybe if they paid a fair rate, then wouldn't struggle as much. I consider my rate to be fair and some vendors have commented to say that my rate is pretty low. Those that work for low rates will get the work but will the books balance right to earn a decant living. I have my price that i'm sticking too and won't work for less, if they want a cheaper price from me it happen. I also had a phone call from a vendor asking me to cover a job for 48pplm, are these people for real lol

I gave them the price for the job and they accepted. The point i was making was they asked what my mileage rate was for future work

I personally would have told them the rate is the same regardless of mileage and how many jobs are given, you are a business and not a charity, the rate is of no concern to them.. Like it or take a risk and go else where..

I agree gary. The way i see it, if vendor pay a gd rate, they get gd sevice. If they pay low, they could risk having problems

Unless I am very much mistaken, the idea of Courier Exchange [which I am no longer a member] is for a vendor to advertise work, for Owner Drivers to then bid on it?

I am slightly confused as you surely put in a bid that you were happy with in the first place? you then did the job I assume.

If they then ask you to do other work cheaper, you either agree or move on.

It is no use having a go at the vendor for what he wishes to pay, There will always be idiots who have no business sense and run around for peanuts until they go bust. The problem is until ALL drivers stick to a sustainable and sensible price, the vendors who take the piss, will continue to get their work covered for nowt!

If you can't get the price you want, DON’T DO IT, the fact you do a 1st class job is really of little consequence unless you achieve a decent return.

Yes i done the job and yes i moved on but they have phoned me on 3 occasion to do more work for them. I told them my rate and they said they will get back to me. I've had no phone call to confirm the job since so i presume they got someone to do it cheaper. Good for them and i hope they do ring me again but i won't shift from my rate because i think its a fair rate. When i first started on my own, i did do a couple of jobs for 65pplm, but it wasn't working for me in a small van. I think small van rate should be between 70pplm to 80pplm, which is what i quote. If they want it cheaper than that then they should be ringing others that will do it for less not me

I don't see how they think this rate is too expensive, even the lower end of my rates

Don't worry about 'them'
You have your own business to run, stick to your guns. They will always find some mug to do their work cheaply, that is the downside of the internet and exchanges I am afraid. It has ruined this job, I was getting more 15 years ago for European jobs than one can ever hope to get today!

Hopefully if and when the drivers realise that they are not making any money tramping around for next to nothing, they will have to put up the prices they pay, but I guess there is a never ending supply of wannabees

I think this is why most don't last more than a year once they have realised. I think they need to do more homework myself. I done my research for approx 3 months before i started on my own. I'm sticking to my price, if they don't like it, shop somewhere else as they say

All you can do is quote your best price each time a job is offered.

I have generally found your quotes to be competitive compared to most others on here, hence work has been offered and accepted on a number of occasions. Just as importantly, you have provided a reliable and efficient service too, which is why I called you the other evening to offer you a run, even though you were not quite the cheapest. Unfortunately on that occasion, someone else had already booked you, so you must be doing something right!

Anyway, the point is, if what you are doing is working for you, then don't fix what isn't broken :-)

It's can be a fine line sometimes between being competitive & to cheap for your own good. We all need to stick to a fair price for vendors & ourselves, ther is no point being a busy fool!
