Website Promotion

I cant believe the costs involved in promoting a website!

I was talking to a chap that runs a small SEO company, he tells me he makes the site get to the top of google.

He told me that the companys that appear on the first page for Courier or same day courier are paying around £40,000 a year to be there! That's a lot of money, do they really pay that much?

He said to be at the top locally you're looking at £2-3k per year, thats more than a new van!

Does anybody here appear at the top or like us do people just know you?

Pardon my french but that's Bo**ocks. You can appear at the top of Google for around £30 £40 a month using Google ads and you set them to appear at the times you want and on what days you choose. The more you add to your site and have good content your site will move up the natural listings and then it does not cost you at all. We have an SEO business in the next office and they can't do any more than we all ready do.

I'll tell you what i can do it for a mere £25,00 ....Now that's a Deal.

I think it depends on the nature of your business. If your average transaction value or profit margin is very low you need to generate a lot of traffic. We can get away with a handful of transactions a day. A coffee shop needs hundreds.

You've opened a can of worms here. SEO is complex stuff, but its over complicated by SEO's to make it sound like you need them. They talk the talk, you nod and smile, and sign up for 12 months.

I've really yet to be convinced, that for Companies our size, they can do anything more than you can with a bit of swatting up.

Google keep moving the goalposts, so everyone has a chance on being on page 1, and SEO's try and keep their clients ahead of the game. Personally I think it's all bollox and an industry that has made itself up.

trouble is with the experts google move the goal posts on a regular basis as they develop even more ways to be nosey gits

most 'experts' seem to use ad words etc which you can do yourself

A friend of mine had his own web design company a few years back, and he says the best and cheapest way to get high up on Google is to have a link to your website from another website with high traffic.

A client of his had her business featured in the Daily Mail, and they put a link to her website on theirs. Apparently it did better for her Google ranking than he could ever have achieved.
