I was offered a van load to Isle of man other day and had to turn it down due to Ferry cost job value was 500 and ferry cost was even more Some my question is this how do you get a van to isle of man without its costing more than the value of the run?

10314Yes Ferry costs are silly to the Isle of Man, but thats what happens when there's only one operator. From Liverpool though, its just less than £300 return, so not sure where you get higher than the job value. If it were me i'd try and sub it out cos you may find someone co-loading going over there

5507I personally stay away from isle of man jobs, because customers just don't want to pay the high ferry price. It's funny when you tell the price the price, a lot of the time i wtf if you know what i mean

3617Its only expensive as Speed has rightly pointed out as its operated by Steam Packet and they have the sole right as they own the ports on the IOM, try delivering when the TT is on, alternatively you could fly..
Williams Transport
3691For deliveries to IOM we use [business] in Skelmersdale - Manx Independent Carriers run direct from their depot.

Which is ideal if the customer does not request a dedicated delivery! :)
Abbott Couriers
796Quote them 'plus ferry at cost' basis.

Isn't that the norm?

Agreed, if the customer requires dedicated then you need to add "ferry at cost", but you do need to make your customer aware of the potential cost and the limitations imposed due to sailing times. If the item is under 20kgs then a return flight from LPL and a taxi on the island may be a viable alternative and should be no more than £150 + the taxi.

3691A Ferry account with [name] generally gets sensible ferry rates.

10314No matter who you have an account with, as there is only one company that crosses it's very unlikely you'll get much change out of £300. Plenty fly out though, so dependng on weight, dims and timings, always an option, or as [name] says... Avoid doing the Isle of Man... Much easier... lol

I always find that when you tell the customer the price, the shock is the normal reaction and ends up not going lol

It is then good to have a price ready for a next day, such as via [business] through yourselves.

729I got quoted £1300 for sprinter and driver from heysham so ended up taking it to skem for a fraction of the cost with manx independent

2848Manx folk are not stupid! They know freight costs are expensive compared to other routes. If it is 'urgent' they will accept what costs are involved.
If customer is ok with their freight being co loaded, obviously then a cheaper option can be sourced!

463I took a 7.5 tonne vehicle over in may the cost was £2,000 return how do you re charge? Good job the customer booked and paid the ferry Again steam packet a ferry to Denmark is cheaper!

2848Good luck to the Steam Packet company, captive market so who can blame them making a killing?
