And people wonder why jobs don't get posted on here. With that kind of offer, i seriously think someone is just taking the P**S. I mean how much do these people actually think that we charge our customers

Smith Direct

Deffo silly quotes had one myself the other day nearly £200 for mwb to do 67 miles and that was on the big yellow but on the other hand ive priced jobs on both sites and been told we havn't even charged the customer that so both sides need to sort out

All this moaning about prices is riddiculous! There is no such thing as a 'going rate' all a driver should be concerned about is charging enough to cover costs and what they want as a profit. What the vendor is making or charging the customer is absolutely nothing to do with anyone else other than the customer and vendor! We often quote high for jobs we are not bothered about getting, sometimes the customer gives the go ahead, sometimes not, but we will be getting a good price for a job we really did not want.
It is no use speculating that the customer is being charged too much, or too little, as the overall picture is only known to the relevant two parties. We often get customers asking specifically for a motorcycle, yet they stall when given a price! What they do not understand is that a motorcycle costs far more to maintain and run than a van! Our price is what it is, they pay for a good professional service, and that is why we have kept the same customers for nearly 25 years! If a customer wants the cheapest, then good luck to them! they will more than likely fall foul, with their goods being co-loaded with the consequence of their items being delivered late or not as required.

Get over, this 'going rate' nonsense, and only work for the price you 'need', forget about clutching at straws in the hope of getting a backload to subsidise a low quote in the first place. If your quote is not accepted, just move on.

Placed job on here got price lets say high, when asked I was told good vans cost more. Dont we run good vans.

Lewis Haulage

I think this job is getting silly or maybe my schizophrenia is kicking in again. I am going through the 'should I carry on or jack' stage again. More jobs going to cars or the increase in backload prices. I admire you guys that have been going for years.

This is not a moan as its not really my style, I just wonder where we are heading.

Home shopping from the internet means we are heading for the need for more and more home deliveries , be it by the Yodels DPD's or myHermes calibre of multi dropping, or the "retail sameday" offered by you know who. And like I or not that means a lot of part-timers working evenings in their cars for extra pin money.

Some will see that as an opportunity, some a hindrance to real courier work.

Personally that side of the business is one that doesn't interest me, it just confuses everyone and gets in the way of the more quality work most of us are looking for. I'm not saying there isn't a place for it, for from it, there is a place for that kind of work but I just don't happen to think that it's here.

You may think I'm silly disregarding it, particularly as it's expanding at a rate of knots, but it's a logistical nightmare and i've done that, been there and discarded the t-shirt many moons ago.

I'd much rather deal with customers who know what they're doing, and with couriers who know what they're doing.

Hopkins Direct

Here here to that

Aterall, there's turnover, and there's profit.

We can all be busy fools.

Whilst running around like a blue arsed fly earning next to nothing, you're missing the proper stuff

Too many though are not smart enough to realise this

Depends if you're in this for the long haul or not. Cheap means lowering your standards, and expectations. You'll lose customers and more importantly you'll lose respect

I got one of those free PRO memberships from Anyvan. I did a search this morning for small van jobs and it showed two:-

One was from you-know-who for an antique desk, weight 81.8kg, no other dimensions.

The other was for a double bed and mattress and four or five boxes!

Some companies are a bit poor at the job.

Who ever is offering those prices will soon be out of business unless its a BBFF and even then they will find it hard to cover the work on the basis of the prices, unless its lifestyle couriers doing it..
