Just had an MRI scan and have found out i have severely damaged disc at base of my spine. Got an appointment within 24 hours to see a neuro suregeon at bhams Q.E Hospital

Having already been off work for 6 weeks with an operation imminent and even more convalescing .

Is this the end of my life on the road?

Have any of you guys had disc or spine damage and have still managed to drive for a living?

Sorry to hear of your situation and hope you make a speedy recovery, I personally havent had a problem, but do know of a couple of folk who have had similiar experiences, they are in the industry and did spend quite a bit of time off from it, but the advantage was they werent OD's, so were lucky enough to have folk help out as and when needed, I dont think there situation was as bad as yours, but it did take a fair few months for them to get back to light duties, theyre both now fully operational.

So if you have determination and the fighting spirit you will be back in no time.

On a lighter note I have read in past threads that your an avid pie eater, I think you should avoid pies for a while lol

Mr Gas mans right you have to watch those guts! The worse thing that makes you fat is boredom and driving and if you working you cant avoid it If your ill you get bored

Just back from consultation....they said they want me in tomorrow!!

Consultant says damage to disc severe and gotta get it out asap. Typical recovery time is 6 weeks making potentially 12 weeks off work as a self -employed O. D...

Is that why the government is so keen to create a nation of self employed so we don't get any benefits when sick?

All you newbies please factor in time off work for illness when putting your business plan together!

Pies? Haven't you heard of the horse-meat scandal? No more pies for me

Its not one of the best injuries to have but I do feel the knife is used far too easily these days. Good luck James you'll be out by weekend.

I have 3 ruptured discs as a result of regular self abuse (lifting, carrying, pulling etc) whilst looking after livestock and have spent many hours at the osteopath's hands. At one stage in the 1990's I could not lift a zimmer frame in front of me for 6 weeks but I have never been offered surgery.

Nowadays I recognize my limits and try to use sack barrows and other lifting and carrying aids for heavier items.

Good luck with the op and keep us informed of your (hopefully) speedy recovery.

Gary, my van was shunted in the rear by an HGV owned by www.olearyinternational.com..based in new Ross co Wexford Ireland

Even though i have independent witnesses and official report from the highways agency they still refuse to accept liability. They wont even answer letters or emails from my solicitors.

The vehicle was sign written on the cab rear and curtain side with olearyinternational. Yet they claim it wasn't them

They boast of having excellent relations with customers and suppliers and yet they refuse to accept they

  1. nearly killed me
  2. Hit my vehicle so hard my back and disc was compressed

I'm not a maniac, unlike some people think I am, but if they are not answering you solicitors letters, then I would have to take revenge, what does your solicitor say, are they just going to carry on sending letters, would it not be better to use a irish solicitor, I havnt got a clue just guessing, I overtook two of there trucks last week nr Newcastle, and immediately thought of you even though I haven't met you, hope you screw them good luck.

Seeing as it was a RTA Injury, was the Police Involved? was the tachograph checked? and if the police were not involved why not? As I thought its standard procedure at RTA's with serious injury.

I just came across this interesting article on the use of illegal and uninsured drivers.

http://business.highbeam.com/435983/article-1G1-154451949/dark-side-ireland-migrant-drivers

The firm olearyinternational.com is the same company that crashed into me and are not answering letters from my insurers and solicitor

It seems that they continue to flout the law as their driver and registration number is not on any database

You have to get ruthless, like they would with you, if you affected any part of there business, i have learnt over the years, if you don't get nasty then you won't get anywhere, why nasty that is when people start to take you serious, if i where you and i wasn't getting anywhere, I would be planning some type of revenge and sod it if it's illegal, having uninsured drivers is illegal
