Dropping standards?

Is it me or are standards dropping?

With the ever increasing reliance on technology, the internet and gadgets generally, have we forgotten how to do the most simplest of tasks on our own?

Maybe it's more to do with the older i get the more i notice, or the less tolerant i've become.

Whichever it is, and it may well be a combination of both, it seems my expectations are constantly being tested to the limit. This may or may not be a contibuting factor to the distinct lacking of hair where it used to be, and the increase in words more akin to those heard after the watershed. There are times i witness sideways glances from colleagues and loved ones which i can only describe as a look you may have seen Gary Lineker give to Bobby Robson back in the world cup of 1990 when after a 2nd booking Gazza realised he'd miss the final if we got there, which we didn't. There are times people actually leave the room, as it's probably safer for them to do so.

It seems the simplest of tasks are made over complicated, what used to be a pleasureable experience a chore, and seeing a smile a rarity where once it was plentiful.

I reckon its down to brain overload. Technology moves at such a pace we can no longer keep up. Too much information to take in. We're all beginning to walk around like zombies, unaware of the world we live in, cos we're stuck in our own little bubble of social media, reality tv (now there's a complete misuse of a word) and mindless trivia.

Rant over, i'm now off to bury my laptop in the garden and go build a mud hut somewhere remote

I dont read papers, I don't watch the news, I have a mobile phone and a sat nav, and totally agree with you Rob, I do think it is difficult to get people to smile these days perhaps it's the thought of spending the rest of there life in this dump of a Country.

Bold maybe, bald? Very much depends on the angle i'm at when you look at me. Suffice to say baseball caps have crept into my wardrobe Gary, and I no longer need a brush or a comb (except perhaps for the tash)

As for whether i'm wearing my courier hat or talking in general, i'd say the latter, although there are times when its difficult to keep one's patience when dealing with some customers and some couriers out there. I'm sure the same can be said of some controllers too. God knows i've dealt with a few over the years!

The basics have worked for me for the last (cough) years. I only use the amount of technology needed to do the task. I could use a small printer if I can find room, for printing realease notes and airway bill while out of the house.

Had a new driver start this week. Doing great job when I kept giving him post codes he kept asking for address. Surprised I asked why he replied he dosent use sat nav. Moral of this story all jobs done on time and professionaly who needs sat nav and IT overload that weve now got.

I have to agree with you Rob, I have noticed folk are dropping in standards, for me communication is key and is probably the most important of basic skills in this industry which reflects on us to our clients.

To sum it up, someone asked on facebook the other day, talking about holidays, are you going somewhere exotic this year to sit and look at your phone? I thought that was spot on.
