Covered my first mtvan-posted job on Thursday after getting a text. I was very close to the pick up (Erith, to go to Hounslow) and was already going in the direction the job was headed so I bid just enough to cover my fuel for the job already booked (T/Wells - Wembley) knowing I was almost certain to get my bid accepted. It was not a bid I would have made had I not already been going that way so you imagine how I felt after the Erith job was on board, was headed towards T/Wells and I get a call from the customer telling me the job would not be ready after all so it was cancelled!

So what to do? Call the Erith customer and up the price? No. Take it on the chin and put it down to experience? Yes, of course, it wasn't their fault I got the cancellation. On top of that I got a big enough stone chip en route to Hounslow to warrant a repair (especially as I knew Friday morning would be freezing) and, after waiting around for an hour at Hounslow I was told it was too late for a call out! OK, the cancellation fee I got for the T/Wells job made up a bit - enough to make the journey from Erith - Hounslow just about worthwhile but it just goes to show the risks of bidding low.

Doing as promised regardless

567if the job is a hotshot, then give a hotshot price, its your duty to maximise your profits, think of all the quiet days and the dead miles youve had to do in the past!
Thats how I think anyway, seems to help!
540To tell the truth I was in too much of a rush (ironically, seeing as the pick up I was rushing to was cancelled) to ask. I guess it was a case of "At last, one that fits it with where I'm going!" but I won't make the same mistake again.

567well done, they say its the only way to learn, the hard way, just think of it as your duty, to make a profit then youll not go far wrong
nothing wrong with the strategy just unfortunate bout the cancellation

6679That's really unlucky Pete.

I hope your customer realises that you went out of pocket in order not to let them down and you get some more jobs your way as a result of being so dependable.

1029First class example of why you should NEVER quote that low just to be sure of getting the job.
