If you buy a car with emissions under 100g/km you don't pay any road tax. If you buy a van with emissions under 100g/km do you have to pay road tax?

Of course you do.

What makes it even dafter is if you buy something like a new eco corsavan at 89g/km it's £215, but buy a transit van that's a couple of years old pumping out 296g/km and it's only £135.

Even dafter is I run an lpg van with zero emissions and pay £215pa AND now have to pay congestion charge!

So there is no incentive to run a commercial vehicle with low emissions in this country, I would imagine in most other European countries it is free or reduced, but not in the UK.

Ok, thanks chaps

Quite frankly the level of VED is irrelevant as a financial incentive to anyone covering more than two thousand miles a year.

Any possible savings will be less than the cost of a tank of fuel!

Biggest cost by far is fuel consumption per mile all other costs i.e. Depreciation, Repairs and Routine Maintenance, Insurance pale into near irrelevance compared to the cost of fuel.

In the working life of a Courier Van you would expect to spend 4 x the new purchase value on fuel.

I do agree, but some of the small vans, made by Ford, Vauxhall have mpg averaging 70 mpg and very low emissions, my point was if I was to buy one of these, would it be free road tax, I wouldnt just buy a van just because the tax is free, it has to meet other criteria, it was merely a question I wanted to know, if it did then it a bonus, I now know the answer.
