Just phoned my breakdown "team" at the A.A. Since i joined in April i have changed vehicles so when they enquired my registration number i gaVe them my new details.

ah Sir , we have you under a different vehicle,"yes" i said "that was my old car and this is my new one"

"Well sir ,there will be an admin fee for the changeover Before we send our man out to you we need £49 for admin".

Cue Mr G dropping KFC drumstick to floor!!

"I guess i know what i will be doing come renewal day mate" .

"sorry sir ,but i don't make the rules as im in south Africa and just paid to pretend to be helpful"

Are you going to pay the admin fee?

yes i said if you replace the drumstick i dropped.

"Goodbye"

well lads , where you going to put your breakdown cover money when its renewal time?

My membership of the AA is for full roadside cover which is not that much dearer than basic membership. This covers the member and not the vehicle. So I can break down in any vehicle I like. lol. As for the RAC I left them after 15 no claim years, but that's a long story.

Why do you have a particular vehicle covered?? Do you have multiple drivers?

I am personally covered not the vehicles.

Every year without fail they double the cost and i simply take out a new breakdown policy 2 days before the expiry date. Even the sales people don't know why the cost doubles on renewal. I have called them out twice since 1999

No way. broke down in my daughters horsebox 2 weeks ago, came out and fixed an electrical fault without question.

I have had personal cover since 1999 and simply do it on line every year. I don't have homestart as i have local rescources to cover that, I do however recommend roadside and recovery.

Yes lads i have it all except euro cover ....but he said it only covers my registration and wouldn't budge unless i coughed up £49 admin fee

I would have just hung up and rang again, chances are you would have got another operative, gave him my old reg and if there was a problem with the patrol man just said "sorry mate my mistake"

I do believe there is a plan where it is only the vehicle that is covered.

Were you broken down at the time?

After reading the above, I am beginning to wonder if I have gone in the correct direction with joining the AA ??

Why?

I think the AA is fine with the RAC you find that they usually send out a local garage who if the problem is not fixable can't really be arsed to return you home if it's more than an hour away.

The AA does have a vehicle specific membership which we used when we had 20 small vans running around for [business], [business] Etc.

That way anyone could drive the vans and be covered.

Wonder if [name] needs AA today.

I am puzzled. I know the AA has a 'Business Breakdown Cover' but when I looked into that it was alot more expensive than the Commercial Cover that we took out with National [European] Breakdown. I know some have said that 'normal' AA cover they have received a service without being questioned, but I certainly wouldn't risk being stuck and then discover that that they do not cover commercials.

It would appear that the OP was broken down when he called the AA. The admin fee wasn't just to update the vehicle it was to send someone out to a vehicle that wasn't covered as he'd not told them about the change previously.

Cleared that up then, Only have one van on with the AA so the admin fee should not arise (hopefully).

It's really very simple, do you want cover for a vehicle that is covered regardless of who is driving? or do you want cover for yourself regardless of what vehicle you are driving? You get what you pay for. Terms and conditions for my cover with the AA clearly state that vehicles up to 3.5tonnes are PLG and covered.

rule of thumb, keep your vehicle well maintained so as not to discover a small print issue with breakdown company

Not sure if I have joined the right AA !!! Getting everything set up and operating smoothly as I want it is enough to drive one to drink!! Have also just found that the rough draft to my forthcoming website is available for all to see on the www. I would like to point out it is 'under construction' and is therefore subject to tweaking or even major alteration by my website designer if opinions differ.
