Hello troops, I am currently in the process of leaving the Army after 12 years service and I am looking to join the courier world. I am retiring through injury so I need a job that will not be too physically demanding. I am not falling into the if you enjoy driving and can invest in your own vehicle gag but I am a realist and realise nothing gets handed to you on a plate. When I leave I will be based in Scotland (Dundee) but can't help but notice that a lot of work is in England. I am looking to buy a ford transit connect unless it makes more sense to go larger. All advice even if its small would be appreciated as I am blindfolded at present. Thankyou in advance. Lawrence.

It can be very physically demanding sometimes though. Carrying 37 full archive boxes across a car park and upstairs to a first floor office is a fair effort. Likewise, a pallet load of metal shopfittings might be easily loaded by the forklift but when you need to handball the lot off at the other end as there's no forklift......

It's not all envelopes you know!

Scott I get what your saying mate and I am not looking for an easy time. I am hard working and exploring all options. It is very early days and I am just looking for advice for now. I have been doing my own research and to be honest I am reading mixed reviews.

Hi billy, the little advice that I would give is to try and speak to other couriers up in your area. I would try and speak to dode at pronto dispatch, I think he's based near Glasgow but he does tend to have a bit of work around Scotland.

If your going to join civi street you will need a van load of patience too! things may not run as smoothly as they do on your side of the fence, (waited an hour and a half yesterday for a client to sort themselves out) I would recommend a Berlingo as a van, plenty around and as long as you get the 2.0 hdi fairly bullet proof, I have racked up 100K miles since 06-11 without any problems, the van has done 197k miles now and drives perfectly, 50 to the gallon and loads of handy storage in the front for paperwork etc small vans don't get caught up in loading time too often.

Be prepared to wait to get paid and only let someone run up an account which you can afford to lose, there are various tossers who will stitch you up and they seem to get away with it day in day out,

Pronto would be an excellent idea they are friendly and very trust worthy, good luck!!

Hi you may wish to consider changing your name to avoid any confusion with myself .

What about Sped couriers? Or Ajm sameway couriers? Or B. S couriers?
