Hi folks

I'm very interested in starting up doing long distance work, driving a large panel van. I'm doing a lot of homework, and don't need people telling me there's no money in it or it's not what it used to be. If I go ahead, it won't be without my first one or two customers, and I am aware of the pitfalls of cash flow and chasing money. I am also aware the profit margins aren't what they were some years ago, but fear not: I do not agree with undercutting everyone's prices to get work!

Having said all that, I am interested to know how much difference the above mentioned vans make to the work you are able to get. Much as I love the Sprinter, you can get a lot more weight in a Peugeot Master. Any advice / comments / recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance Jamie

Good luck, enjoy sitting in the ever increasing traffic jams.

Renault master 1300kgs easy 3 pallets (standards)

Merc 1080kgs 4 pallets (standards)

I would take the new master any day over the merc, satnav/cruise/bluetooth standard

The new sprinters are crap compared to the old ones seen 58 reg even 60 regs rusting and broken down

Get the master and put some cash back in your pocket ;-)

You can fit 5 Euro Pallets in a Master if there is no overhang.

As far as weight goes a 2900 Vivaro will carry similar to a 3500 LWB Sprinter.

Thanks for the feedback guys. Much appreciated. Looks like a couple of test drives are coming up. You may have gathered from other posts, I'm impressed with the new Sprinter on many fronts, including the extra corrosion resistance. It seems to be a big improvement on the last model, of which there are now many rusty examples.

My local dealer is Midlands Truck & Van in Birmingham - anyone have experience of them? They made a good first impression on me, but then I am potentially going to be spending around 30-35k there (though not before thoroughly testing the market with a van from Northgate).

30 - 35k may be the list price including VAT but I certainly wouldn't spend more than 23 k + vat on a Sprinter when I would expect to get a Master with all the bells & whistles for 17 k + vat and a better payload.

4.3m master - 950kg payload

4.3m sprinter - 1100kg payload

Where as the 3.7m master can get away with 1250kg's

Most important to weigh up what is more important to YOU weight / load length

Whats that got to do with Sprinter or Master payloads?

Maybe because a Trafic can have as big a payload (but less volume) than some Sprinters?

Question for 021, a few years ago there quite a few traffics and vivaro's knocking about with a proper high roof, are they not manufactured anymore?

Williams Transport

They were built on the continent, Spain possibly. The standard roof ones are mainly built at Luton in a multi-storey factory and could which could not acommodate anything bigger, or so I was led to believe.

Is your the high roof ones?

Williams Transport

No, we have a couple of 3500 LWB Master Panel Vans and a 3500 4 metre curtainsider Master and a LWB 2900 Vivaro standard roof. In the recent past we have also had on hire 2 SWB Transits, a Jumbo, a Crafter and a couple of Sprinters which are used on display fitting work.

What is the lwb 2900 vivaro like on gas, and will it pull the skin of a rice pudding?

Recent brim to brim on a 410 mile run including the lake district starting with a full weight load came back at 42 miles per gallon costing under 12.5p per mile and no skin left on the rice pudding once the first couple of deliveries have been made.
