Hi chaps, looking at a LWB van and I'm looking at a citreon relay 2.2 hitop has anyone had experience of these? real MPG? we have had stirling service from the Berlingo and we are hoping these would be simular reliability wise? any thoughts? can't afford to go down the MERC route and it would be parked at the office so exhaust are a worry!

A colleague has one and can't praise it more highly. He tells me he gets 36mpg.

We have a Fiat Ducato 130BHP LWB and it is probably the best van ever owned. Great warranty [unlimited] too.

Certainly over 30 mpg even driven hard.

I also know someone with a Citroen who had the exhaust stolen whilst parked outside his house! I think this is a problem with whatever make, if parked in a not so well protected area, I have had Mercs before and do not like them, overpriced rust boxes!

Don't even consider the Merc unless you know that you need the full 4m lenght of lightweight goods. The Relay will legally carry 250 kg more. But do factor in a set of rear replacement doors for when they start to break up.

Anything mechanical will need servicing and a Merc is no exception but the older ones do have a good reputation for reliability, having said that the difference in cost between the two vans would pay for a lot of maintenance.

When hiring a Relay / Ducato we have found MPG to be comfortably better than 30 mpg.

I have owned both the Citroen and Peugeot version of the L3H2 and they are superb vans. I need these vans for the payload and not the load length (only 3.5M) but take 3 x full size pallets with ease. I regularly carry pallets of printed matter weighing 1200-1400Kg and the Sprinter would just collapse under that weight. Even fully loaded several times a week I average 35mpg week in and week out. Comfort is much better than transits that I have owned in the past and they don't rust even when chipped and damaged. The only problem that I have ever had with these vans is the EGR valves fail after 120,000 miles. Apart from that only tyres and servicing, and even tyres last over 100,000. An excellent work horse and I will certainly have another.

We have 4 Relay's 3x L3H2 Enterprise and a New L4H2 great vans my drivers love them, do mainly multi - drop parcels locally and get 27 - 28 mpg which is quite good, better than the VW Crafter 4m that was purchased for volume and has been in twice for the DPF fixing, we also run a '61' Berlingo 48 mpg locally so all in all for the price they are a good van, all main dealer supplied, went online got quotes for pre-reg vans then off to main dealers and they matched it with us as the first keepers good deal allround Michael
